Sculptures in Scrap

michael
I have been creating metal sculpture using scrap metal for over twenty five years. I am entirely self taught and have no formal education in art. Instead my formal education consists of a Bachelors in Industrial Technology and a Masters degree in Organizational Leadership. I think that my lack of formal art education has actually been a benefit in some ways. For one, it allows me to create however I want because I don’t know any better.
Most of my sculptures begin with a single piece of metal that reminds me of something. It could be an eye, a nose, a finger, a tail, or some other body part. From this I get an idea and begin creating--adding and shaping, cutting and hammering, welding and grinding. When I consider the sculpture finished, the end result is often something quite different from that initial idea. It’s a very organic process that has no bounds.

With a young family and a fulltime career in middle management in the healthcare industry, I make art in my spare time. My time to create is limited. However, during this time I allow my imagination to become fully engaged and along with the physical demands of the work, I create unique works of art. To me, creating sculpture is my therapy, my creative release, a thing that I do to escape.
I hope you enjoy your time here on my site. If you have any questions or want to know more about a particular sculpture, please feel free to send me an email at michael@zikogiannis.com.
