This sculpture, poem, and video was done for a class assignment in my masters program. The class was Leadership and Imagination and directions for the assignment were to use our imaginations and do something creative that had leadership as the central theme. My grade for the assignment--100%
Servant as Leader
(2006)
Pyramid base, a symbol of stability
On top a servant with leadership ability
Look again, the negative space
There’s much more to this pyramid base
See again at some length
What’s not seen adds to strength
So in vision and dialogue
Try to see what’s in the fogMoving up the stable base
We see the servant perched in grace
Right arm draped with a towel
To clean the environment of any foul
Right hand shaped as a wedge
A tool of power that gives an edge
Carefully though, use it wise
Share the power to strengthen tiesLeft hand balancing an unsettled platter
Filled with those that truly matter
Each unique in their own way
Stand taller and prouder with each hurray
The platter is the organization
Within there’s encouragement and motivation
The servant aspires by choice of conscious
To lead others in striving for excellenceBig picture thinking is a must
Intuition the leader trusts
Frame through frame to transcend
Mind fully open to see and see again
As a whole how’s it going
The vital skill of always knowing
From each perspective, once gotten
Just what are all the optionsThe leader provides ideas and structure
And takes the risk of success or failure
Listening to followers is important as well
Ideas of those served, the leader can propel
So do those served grow as persons
Do the least privileged at least not worsen
And all become healthier, wiser, freer
Serving others, is the role of leader
